Managing Monitoring Operations During an Oil Spill Response

When 9000 litres of Kerosene leaked from a storage tank, we were brought in as part of the spill response, in accordance with a regime agreed with the local Environmental Health Officer.

  • We managed the monitoring and sampling of groundwater, ground gas, surface waters and vapours.
  • We supported the remediation of the site through vapour extraction.
  • We undertook the monitoring used in the occupation health risk assessment of the surrounding area.

Boundary Air Monitoring at a Central London Development

To ensure minimal impact on the surrounding environment, we monitored levels of dust and various vapours at the site boundaries.

  • Parameters monitored included BTEX, styrene, naphthalene, directional dust and total suspended dust.
  • In the initial years of the project we returned quarterly for additional groundwater monitoring to ensure standards were maintained.

Soil & Solid Processing at Former Builder’s Yard

On behalf of the contractor we managed the demolition and remediation of this site to prepare it for a residential development. Our work helped our client act in accordance with the remediation method statement agreed with the Environment Agency and the Local Authority.

  • We managed and coordinated the demolition contractor, utility companies and other interested parties.
  • We excavated and processed concrete and brick foundations to meet criteria for re-use on site.
  • We provided a verified clean soil capping layer for the garden areas.

Car Assembly

Groundwater Monitoring at Former Car Assembly Plant

As a condition of the remediation of this site, our client agreed a groundwater monitoring regime with the Environment Agency. We executed this regime, providing the information required for the project to go ahead.

  • We carried out ground gas monitoring and a follow-up course of low-flow groundwater sampling.
  • We measured the flow rate of various gases as well as relative borehole pressure.

Borehole

Various sites in the Midlands & Southern England

We were involved in risk assessments on five sites in Worcestershire, Avon, Somerset, Berkshire and Kent. A series of boreholes were drilled to determine the ground conditions and check for contamination.

Sites were two retail parks, a former dockland, a former industrial site and a freight haulage yard.
We performed ground gas monitoring followed by low flow groundwater sampling at each of the sites.

Landfill

Ground Gas Sampling at Former Landfill Site

The designers of a new logistics facility brought us in to determine the impact of adjacent landfill on their proposed buildings. Our monitoring and analysis enabled our client to take the appropriate precautions.

  • We undertook two cycles of gas sampling and lab testing.
  • We confirmed the presence of gaseous and liquid landfill products including methane, carbon monoxide and other volatile organic compounds.

Industrial Estate

Industrial Estate, North West England

We were brought in to monitor and sample the estate prior to its closure and sale, to aid in creating a design strategy for redevelopment. The main focus was on identifying contaminants.

  • Monitoring and sampling of low flow groundwater identified key contaminants, including total and dissolved metals and fuel oil.
  • We deployed water level loggers across the site and identified a significant correlation between the groundwater levels and the river tides.
